This is an original, vintage Soviet movie poster for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (Пролетая над гнездом кукушки) the 1975 American drama directed by Miloš Forman. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is No. 33 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Movies list. The film was the second to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director and Screenplay)

Poster & Artist:

This poster was printed in Moscow by Reklamfilm (Рекламфильм) on October 29th, 1987. Only 3,000 copies were printed, foreign films tended to have smaller print runs for posters given their limited release in the USSR. This poster was designed by Yuri Bokser (Юрий Боксер) an innovative and creative poster designer who helped usher in a new visual aesthetic in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He designed posters for films like Stalin's Funeral and a the early 90s release of Star Wars in the USSR.

This particular design shows the back of a man's head that you can see clear through with a fence that someone is climbing. The fence is framed with colorful patterns and compass marking North, South, East and West. At the bottom the film's title is written both in Russian and more faintly in English in a child's handwriting, in crayon. Can you imagine a design like this being used in the US to market the film?! We certainly can't and it's designs like this that make Soviet and Polish movie posters so interesting and unique.

Size & Condition:

The poster measures 52.5x84cm or 20 3/4" x 33" inches. It is in excellent condition and will display very well. There is no creasing, this poster was never folded and there are no visible signs of damage of any kind. The photos attached are of the poster itself, we only have one.

Film:

The film stars Jack Nicholson as Randle McMurphy, a new patient at a mental institution, and features a supporting cast of Louise Fletcher, William Redfield, Will Sampson, Sydney Lassick, Brad Dourif, Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd in his film debut. Considered by some to be one of the greatest films ever made.
