One of the wonderful things about Soviet posters is that they would almost certainly be scrapped by any corporate marketing department in the West. This poster of Freddie Mercury as a guitar with broken strings is a wonderful example of the imaginative work created by Soviet artists unconstrained by commercial considerations.
This is a highly imaginative and unexpected take on Miloš Foreman's 1975 film, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. This poster was designed by Yuri Bokser, who produced some incredible work in the late 1980s and 1990s. The film wasn't released in the Soviet Union until 1987 and there were just 3,000 posters printed to support it's limited run.
Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, Solaris is widely considered to be one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. The poster was printed in 1972 to promote the film's original release. Over it's 15 year run in theaters Solaris sold over 10m tickets and remains an important and admired film in the former Soviet Union and around the world.
